HOT ROLLED MILD STEEL
Hot rolled (HR) steel is a type of steel that is produced through a process of heating the steel above its recrystallisation temperature and then rolling it into the desired shape. The high temperature of the process makes the HR steel more malleable and easier to shape. This process also results in a rough surface texture on the steel.
Hot Rolled, Pickled and Oiled (HRPO): The HRPO sheets and coils are produced through a similar hot rolling process to a hot rolled sheet, but they undergo an additional pickling and oiling step. During the pickling process, the steel is passed through an acid bath to remove the black layer of iron oxides which forms during the hot rolling process, and to protect the surface from any moisture. The steel is then coated with oil to prevent rusting. This process improves the surface finish of the steel, making it more suitable for painting or other surface treatments.
Categorisation based on different IS standards:
According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), sub-qualities A and BR stand for:
A: Impact test not required; semi-killed/killed
BR: Impact test optional; if required at room temperature; semi-killed/killed
Semi-killed steel is a metal alloy compound of iron and carbon partially deoxidised with minimal gas release during solidification. Killed steel is treated with a powerful deoxidising agent to prevent carbon-oxygen reaction during solidification.
The IS 2062 is a standard laid out by BIS, and 2011 signifies the year this standard was last revised. The IS 2062:2011 standard is for hot rolled medium and high tensile structural steel. E350 is the grade, with E standing for Engineering steel. The chequered plates of IS 3502:2009 conform to the requirements of IS 2062.
The IS 1079:2017 standard has hot rolled carbon steel sheets, and strips. These steel products are supplied within semi-killed or killed conditions.
Hot Rolled Steel Applications
Automotive and Manufacturing Industry:
JSW Steel Hot Rolled Sheets IS 2062:2011 E250A: These sheets are commonly used in the automotive and manufacturing industries due to their versatility and strength. They can be shaped and formed into components used in automobile chassis and frames. They are used in various industries including petrochemicals, offshore drilling, power generation, and more.
JSW Steel Hot Rolled Coils IS 2062:2011 E250A: Similar to the sheets, these coils are valuable in the automotive sector for making parts that require strength and durability, such as engine components, brackets, and structural elements. Because of their resistance, they are commonly used in marine, chemical, and gas applications in seawater.
JSW Steel HRPO Sheets IS 2062:2011 E250A: These sheets are popular in manufacturing due to their improved surface finish, easy paintability and high formability. They are used to make precision components, machine parts, and other items requiring a smoother surface.
Construction Industry:
JSW Steel Hot Rolled Coils/Sheets IS 2062:2011 E250BR: These products are often employed in the construction industry for fabricating structural components, beams, columns, and other load-bearing elements. The 'BR' variant might indicate higher strength, suitable for construction applications.
JSW Steel Hot Rolled Coils/Sheet IS 2062:2011 E350A: This product line likely finds use in heavy construction, including bridges and large building projects. Its higher strength and durability make it suitable for supporting substantial loads.
JSW Steel Hot Rolled Coils/Sheets IS 2062:2011 E350BR: Similar to the E350A products, the 'BR' variant of these coils and sheets could be used for applications requiring superior strength and structural integrity in construction projects.
JSW Steel HRPO Sheets IS 1079:2017 HR2: The steel is used to make beams, columns, and structural supports.
General Manufacturing and Fabrication:
JSW Steel Hot Rolled Sheets/Coils IS 2062:2011 E250A and E250BR: These products may be utilised in general manufacturing and fabrication processes, from making industrial machinery to creating components for consumer goods.
JSW Steel Hot Rolled Sheets/Coils IS 2062:2011 E350A and E350BR: Similarly, the E350 series of products can be employed in various manufacturing applications where strength and quality are key factors.
JSW Steel HRPO Sheets IS 1079:2017 HR2: They make furniture components like table legs, chair frames, and shelving units. They can also make household appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and ovens. They provide a smooth surface finish and good weldability.
