Choosing the right type of cement for railway projects

1. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC)

Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is one of the most widely used types of cement due to its general versatility and strong binding properties. PPC offers enhanced resistance to chemical attacks, making it suitable for projects exposed to water or harsh environmental conditions. Its superior durability and reduced heat of hydration make it ideal for large-scale railway infrastructure, such as bridges and tunnels, where minimising thermal cracks is important.

3. Sulphate-resistant cement

For railway projects in regions with high sulphate content in the soil or water, sulphate-resistant cement is an essential choice. This type of cement prevents sulphate attack, which can lead to expansion, cracking, and deterioration of the concrete over time. Using sulphate-resistant cement, OPC 53 sleeper grade, ensures the longevity and stability of structures such as platforms and bridges in these challenging environments.
