How Is Steel Made? A Complete Journey from Raw Material to Finished Product-image

Steel is the backbone of construction and manufacturing, and its journey from raw material to finished product is both complex and fascinating. For MSMEs, understanding this process helps in making smarter procurement decisions and sourcing the right grade of steel for their projects. At JSW One MSME, we make this journey seamless by enabling businesses to buy steel online, with flexible order sizes, bulk pricing, and assured delivery.
The six stages of steelmaking

1. Producing iron
Steel production begins with iron ore, which is mined and combined with coke and lime. In a blast furnace or Corex furnace, these raw materials are melted to produce hot metal or pig iron at nearly 1,450°C. Although strong, pig iron contains impurities that must be removed to prevent brittleness before it can move to the next stage.

2. Primary steelmaking
In this stage, pig iron undergoes refinement. Using Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) or an electric arc furnace, the carbon content is reduced to less than 1%. Scrap steel and oxygen are introduced to remove impurities, while alloys are added to create the desired chemical composition. Vacuum de-gassing ensures gases are removed, resulting in raw steel ready for further processing.

3. Secondary steelmaking
Steel grades are adjusted here to suit end-use applications. By modifying impurities and adding elements like aluminium or carbon, steel is tailored for products ranging from drawing-quality sheets to structural steel. Techniques such as stirring, ladle injection, and temperature control ensure the final product meets exact specifications.

4. Continuous casting
Molten steel is cast into moulds, hardened, and drawn into slabs, billets, or beams. Once cooled, the steel is prepared for rolling or forging. These shapes form the basis of hot rolled steel and long steel products.

5. Primary forging (hot rolling)
Through hot rolling, steel is shaped into sheets, plates, beams, and coils. Rolled steel is categorised as flat or long products depending on whether it originates from slabs or billets. This process improves ductility, toughness, and overall workability, making it ideal for HR coils and plates.

6. Secondary forging and finishing
To achieve the final shape and performance, steel undergoes finishing processes such as coating, heat treatment, machining, or joining. These steps prepare it for specific industries including construction, automotive, and appliances.

Types of steel products

Flat steel products
Flat steel includes hot rolled steel, cold rolled steel, and coated steel.
•    Hot rolled steel: versatile and cost-effective, commonly used for construction and infrastructure.
•    Cold rolled steel: offers superior finish, tighter tolerances, and higher strength, making it suitable for automotive and appliances.
•    Coated steel: improves corrosion resistance and aesthetics, including galvanised (GI), galvalume (GL), PPGI, and PPGL.

Long steel products
Long steel, produced from billets or blooms, includes TMT rebars, bars, and wire rods. These products are essential for construction and infrastructure, providing tensile strength and resilience.

Towards greener steelmaking

The steel industry is rapidly evolving to reduce its environmental footprint. JSW adopts advanced methods such as:
•    HYBRIT technology: using hydrogen instead of carbon to produce green steel.
•    Jet process: improving scrap utilisation in converters.
•    Molten oxide electrolysis: reducing energy needs while simplifying steelmaking.
JSW has also achieved the GreenPro Ecolabel certification, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
